New Oral COVID 19 Vaccine Can Prevent Diseases!
Duke University scientists found that a new COVID 19 vaccine designed to be taken orally. It not only protects the host but also reduces the airborne spread of the virus to other close contacts.
They demonstrated the potential of a COVID vaccine that acts through the mucosal tissue to neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus and limit infection and the spread of the active virus in airborne particles.
The research was published in Science Translational Medicine and reviewed by Stephanie N. Langel et al.
Given that most of the world is under-immunized – and this is especially true for children – the possibility that a vaccinated person with a breakthrough infection could transmit COVID to unimmunized family members or community members poses a public health risk.
Developing vaccines that not only protect against disease but also reduce transmission to unvaccinated people would be a significant benefit.
In the study, the team tested a vaccine candidate that uses an adenovirus as a vector to express the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The human vaccine is intended to be taken as a pill.
The team found in hamsters that the vaccine-induced a robust antibody response in the blood and lungs.
When exposed to high levels of SARS-CoV-2 virus, leading to breakthrough infections, the animals were less symptomatic than unvaccinated hamsters. They had lower levels of infectious virus in their noses and lungs.
Because of this, they didn’t shed as many viruses through normal airborne exposure.
Unlike vaccines, which are injected into the muscle, mucosal immunizations increase the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA) — the immune system’s first line of defence against pathogens — in the nose and lungs.
These mucosal entry points are then protected, making it less likely for vaccinated people (to transmit infectious viruses when they sneeze or cough).
The results indicate that mucosal immunization is a viable strategy to reduce the spread of COVID through airborne transmission.
